I'm Verity, a knitter/crocheter living in London with a strong passion for the environment and doing what I can to help the planet :)
In my practice I use 100% natural fibres, spinning the yarn and dyeing it with natural colours gifted to us from our beautiful planet. I then use the yarn to knit or crochet fun colourful pieces with a focus on flowers. My process involves sitting outside drawing the flowers onto graph paper then using this pattern to create the knitted textile, I am inspired by butterflies, fairies, colour, nature and magical things.
I went on a self-motivated 15 month travelling advventure in September 2023 researching textiles across the world (primarily in southeast Asia, Nepal and India)
Mainly looking at traditional textiles that are passed down through generations and learning techniques with the makers, always working my way back through the chain to see the whole process and who is involved. As it’s very important we know where our clothes come from, who is making it and are they being paid fairly with a safe working environment!
Researching into different natural fibres I discovered many amazing textiles and believe this is the way forward for the textile industry.
Sustainability within the textile industry is something I consider every day, especially with it being the third most polluting industry in the world, and I want to be part of the change. My whole life one thing has been clear to me and that’s textiles. I’ve only ever wanted to be in this industry, and now textiles has become so damaging in the world, effecting many innocent people negatively worldwide and exploiting thousands of workers. Instead of being complacent about it I just changed my views and taught myself about the problems in the industry. I became conscious of how I can help and what changes I can implicate in my life.
